First-Hand Insights on Cafeteria Pop

Cafetería Pop in Mérida has been a local favorite since April 18, 1971, the day it opened. At that time, air conditioning was still a luxury, and Cafetería Pop was actually the first café in Mérida to have it.

Just two blocks north of Plaza Grande, this longtime favorite is known for fast, affordable meals. Locals love the mix of American and Mexican breakfasts – Mexican eggs, toast, fruit, and coffee or tea are a common pick.

Huevos motuleños are a must-try here. This Yucatecan classic features fried eggs on a tortilla, topped with tomato sauce, black beans, cheese, and often plantains and cilantro.

Cafetería Pop may look simple, but it’s consistent and tasty, making it one of Mérida’s go-to breakfast spots. For a more modern vibe, head to nearby Márago Coffee and check out their specialty brews.

A Simple and Relaxed Atmosphere

The vibe is simple and unpretentious, perfect for those wanting to eat where the locals eat. It’s a popular spot for students, and it stays open late every day until 10:30 PM.

It’s not the most fancy place. The decor is pretty laid-back, featuring some murals on the walls, and the interior has a somewhat old-fashioned feel. There’s an open-air courtyard filled with greenery, creating a relaxed, outdoor atmosphere.

When to Go and Where to Sit

Here are a few additional tips:

  1. Cafetería Pop is busiest between 9:00 and 10:00 AM, so if you want to avoid the crowd, it’s best to arrive earlier.

  2. Since Cafeteía Pop is located in the city center, finding parking can be a bit tricky during peak hours. If possible, consider walking or using public transport.

  3. For a cozy meal, you can also enjoy their lounge area. If the weather is nice, take advantage of the open-air courtyard to enjoy your meal surrounded by greenery.

Restaurante Pórtico del Peregrino

Cafetería Pop and Restaurante Pórtico del Peregrino in Mérida share both the same ownership and the same building, making them a well-known pair of dining spots in the city. They are both located at Calle 63 #416.

Pórtico del Peregrino offers a more formal lunch and dinner experience, catering to a refined crowd. Though it shares the space, it has a distinct atmosphere and purpose.

The name "Pórtico del Peregrino" (Pilgrim's Portico) refers to the tradition of pilgrims passing through Mérida on their way to the nearby town of Izamal, which is famous for its religious importance.
