Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán
The Autonomous University of Yucatan is an autonomous public university in the state of Yucatán and is housed in an impressive building with a nice Spanish style facade.
There is also a beautiful arched courtyard inside. The university is very centrally located on Calle 60, right between Plaza Grande and Parque Santa Lucía, opposite Teatro José Peón Contreras and Iglesia de Jesus.
It is considered one of the oldest universities in the country. The interesting architecture invites you to pay a short visit. The building was constructed under King Philip III of Spain in 1611.
Teaching areas
There are five campuses organized by fields of knowledge for social sciences, economics, administration and humanities, exact sciences and engineering, health sciences, biology and agricultural sciences as well as architecture, habitat, art and design.
More than 26,000 people are currently studying at the university (as of 2024) and there are around 700 professors who teach.
History
The origins of today's autonomous university go back to the Colegio de Mérida (College of Mérida) opened in 1618 and the Real y Pontificia Universidad de Mérida (Royal and Pontifical University of Merida) founded in 1624 and closed in 1767 because King Charles III expelled the Society of Jesus from the Spanish dominions.
The current university was founded on February 25, 1922 as Universidad Nacional del Surest (National University of the Southeast) on the initiative of the then governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The aim was to create three national universities: one in the north based in Monterrey, one in the west in Guadalajara and one in the south-east in Mérida.
In 1938 the name was changed to Universidad de Yucatán (University of Yucatan). In 1984 the autonomy regulation came into force and since then the current name, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (Autonomous University of Yucatan), has been used. Today, the UADY is considered the best university in south-eastern Mexico.
