Teatro José Peón Contreras

During my last visit to Mérida, I was drawn to the Teatro José Peón Contreras in Mérida, a masterpiece of architecture and culture. The Theater is on Calle 60 between Calle 59 and Calle 57.

The impressive Theater is located right opposite the equally magnificent building of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (Autonomous University of Yucatan), not far from Parque de Santa Lucía and Plaza Grande.

Built between 1900 and 1908, this neoclassical theater is not only the oldest in the city but also one of the most important opera houses in Mexico. Its elegant design, rich history, and cultural significance make it a place that any visitor should explore.

Important:

The historic José Peón Contreras Theater has been undergoing restoration work after sustaining damage in a fire in November 2022. Fortunately, some of its galleries have reopened, offering visitors a chance to appreciate the theater’s remarkable beauty.

If you are planning to attend a performance, you will be glad to know that the symphony orchestra, which traditionally performs on the theater's stage, is presenting its concerts at the nearby Museo Palacio de la Música. Of course, this can change at any time, so you should check the official pages beforehand.

A Historic and Artistic Legacy

The site of the theater has been a cultural hub for centuries, with the first theater on this spot constructed as early as 1806. The current building, inaugurated on December 21, 1908, was named after José Peón Contreras, a celebrated poet, playwright, doctor, and politician from Mérida. He passed away just a year before the theater opened, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.

Designed by Italian architects, including Enrico Deserti and Pío Piacentini, the theater reflects the elegance of French neoclassical and Renaissance styles. The façade is a tribute to European aesthetics, and inside, the Carrara marble staircase and frescoed dome painted by Nicolás Allegretti are simply stunning.

World-Class Performances

The theater with 837 seats hosts the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan, as well as national and international events, plays, operas, music, dance, vaudeville, children's shows, festivals and conferences.

Over the years, renowned performers and ensembles like Tania Libertad, Armando Manzanero, the Kiev Ballet, and the Tiepolo String Ensemble have graced its stage.

Architectural and Artistic Splendor

Stepping inside, I was struck by the attention to detail. The plush red velvet seating, gilded balconies, and Corinthian columns create a timeless ambiance.

The chandelier made of iridescent cut glass hanging from the dome adds an extra touch of brilliance. Every element, from the frescoed dome to the richly decorated interiors, reflects the theater’s commitment to artistic excellence.

The Teatro José Peón Contreras offers more than performances. Its terrace, café, and restaurant are perfect spots to unwind before or after an event. The galleries showcase works by prominent artists, making it a hub for Mérida’s vibrant art scene.

My Recommendations

If you have the chance, I highly recommend attending a performance here. The acoustics and sightlines are exceptional, making any show an unforgettable experience. Even if no performance fits your schedule, exploring the architecture, galleries, and ambiance of the theater is well worth your time.

Performance dates and prices

The performance dates vary (see Sinfonica de Yucatan). Typically, the great Yucatan Symphony Orchestra performs at the theatre on most (but not all) Fridays at 9:00 pm and Sundays at Noon. Ticket prices depending on the event (from about 150 pesos).

The theater is owned by the state government, and as a result prices are subsidized, so the tickets are quite cheap. Even if you don't want to or can't attend a performance, you should go inside the theater. The architectural structure is very well preserved and the building is very worth visiting.

Some more Tips

There is a tourist information module in the lobby to help you plan your visit. Nearby, you will discover delightful cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal before the show or relax with drinks afterward.

If possible, plan your visit on a weekday to avoid the larger weekend crowds. Look out for special gallery exhibits during local festivals or cultural events to make your visit even more enjoyable. And when visiting the theater, you might find it helpful to bring a light jacket or shawl, as the interior can feel cool (especially compared to outside).
