Since 2006 every Sunday one lane of the main street, Paseo de Montejo, is closed for car traffic and "La Biciruta" - the bike ride in Mérida - takes place from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. La Bici-Ruta runs from La Ermita de Santa Isabel (Calle 77 at 64) to Plaza Grande, then north to the end of Paseo de Montejo just past the Monumento a la Patria. The exact starting and ending points may vary, as the route is occasionally adjusted.
If you don't have a bike: All varieties of bicycles are also available for rental along the Paseo de Montejo. The Mérida City Council is also offering a free bike-sharing program through August.
To do this, you need to scan the QR code at the bike stations or through the app "En Bici - Muévete por Mérida". I was there shortly after 8:00 am and there were still enough bikes from the city.
Sometimes there are even free of charge bikes from sponsors if you arrive early enough. In the early morning, Telcel still had a free choice, as you can see.
Let's start at the end. Depending on how you look at it, the car-free route starts or ends just behind the Monumento a la Patria from the historic city center.
From the Monumento a la Patria, the left lane is always reserved and the right lane is free for traffic. It's just after 8:00 am and not very busy at this time of day - but it was also September, so it was quite warm.
Anything that is not motorized is allowed, whether it's a bicycle, roller skates, skateboard or simply walking.
Kids also like to take the opportunity to expand their radius of action. The Paseo de Montejo is usually the most crowded.
It wasn't just a group of nuns on the road, but that day...
...a group of demonstrators also took the opportunity to draw attention to something. Unfortunately, my Spanish wasn't good enough to understand the slogans. There was even a TV crew present that was filming.
The Paseo de Montejo only goes straight ahead. After that, however, there are helpers at all intersections who will show you the way. The route leads past the Plaza Grande to La Ermita de Santa Isabel (Calle 77 at 64), although I only got as far as here :-)
