Celestún
The most popular thing to do in Celestún is to visit the 600 square kilometer biosphere reserve "Reserva de la Biósfera Ría Celestún".

A boat trip is a "must have" when making a trip to Celestún. We boat into the long corridor surrounded by mangrove forests. At the beginning the water is blue...
As we approach the mangroves, the water turns light brown. This is due to the tannins in the roots of the mangroves, which are released into the water and color it brown.
Depending on the season, whole colonies of flamingos populate the area, it is estimated up to 35,000.
It is also related to water height, as flamingos prefer shallow water where they can catch fish. When we visited Celestún, there were only a few flamingos in the lagoons.
Between the mangroves the water gets darker and shimmers in all shades from dark red to dark brown.
The way leads us to the fresh water spring "Ojo de Agua Baldiosera", where you can also swim - at least if you are not afraid of possible crocodiles or snakes, which can also be found here.
The roots of the mangroves grow in all directions and form interesting sculptures.
The almost impenetrable root system of the mangroves also provides a habitat for a variety of small animals, such as snails, mussels, crabs or insects.
Mangroves are among the most productive ecosystems in the world, together with coral reefs and rainforests. Due to falling leaves, flowers and fruits, a lot of organic material is available at any time.
We are on the way back again. Unfortunately, we have only a few (but beautiful) photos of Celestún taken by our daughter Malena with cell phone. But we'll make up for it on our next visit. Promised.
