First-Hand Insights on Grand Hotel de Mérida
The historic Grand Hotel de Mérida, housed in a beautiful neoclassical building with an open, high-ceilinged reception hall and elegant architectural details, first opened its doors in 1901.
Located directly on Parque de Hidalgo, just one block from the Plaza Grande, the hotel has a rich and eventful past. Its interiors are filled with antiques, reflecting an old-world charm that transports guests to another era.
Even if you're not staying overnight, it's worth stepping inside to admire the hotel's stunning lobby, which features antique furniture and decorative pieces. Some of the antique furniture is actually for sale, sourced from a local antique shop.
If You Like to Stay
As a guest, keep in mind that the hotel's age is reflected in its rather small rooms, slightly worn furnishings, and limited modern amenities.
Some will appreciate the authentic patina of time, while others may find the signs of age, like worn edges and a bit of dust in certain corners, less appealing.

There is no elevator and no swimming pool at Grand Hotel de Mérida due to the hotel's construction date, but air conditioning and television have been installed in the meantime.
In Mérida, houses are typically built side by side rather than as standalone structures, which is why some hotel rooms next to the neighboring building on the left have no windows to the outside.

Day Tours
The Gran Hotel de Mérida offers a variety of day tours to nearby attractions.
Guests can arrange visits to archaeological sites such as Uxmal and Chichén Itzá, where they can explore ancient Mayan ruins. Nature enthusiasts might enjoy trips to the Celestún Biosphere Reserve, known for its rich biodiversity and flamingo populations.
Additionally, the hotel can organize excursions to local cenotes, providing opportunities for swimming and relaxation. These tours can be booked through the hotel's tour desk.
Parque de Hidalgo
The Grand Hotel de Mérida's central location right next to Parque de Hidalgo is definitely a big advantage, putting you right in the middle of the city's lively atmosphere - if that’s what you're looking for.

Starbucks and Helados Santa Clara
On the ground floor, you'll find a Starbucks and a Helados Santa Clara ice cream parlor, making it a convenient spot to cool off when the heat in Mérida gets intense. I enjoy grabbing an ice cream and relaxing on one of the park's shady benches under a tree.
