First-Hand Insights on Tokio 07 Izakaya

Tokio 07 Izakaya, located in northeast Mérida at the entrance to Cholul, serves up authentic Japanese cuisine in a relaxed setting.

The menu features a wide variety of sushi, from California rolls to maki and sashimi, with some creative twists like a sushi burger.

If you love ramen, you'll find some solid options here, and there are also other Japanese dishes and sweet treats like matcha ice cream and New York cheesecake.

For drinks, the selection is surprisingly varied, offering everything from traditional Jamaica and tamarind drinks to soda, lemonade, Heineken, and even wine.

Anything Else to Know?

The prices are reasonable, and if someone in your group isn’t into Japanese food, there's a Los Taquitos restaurant right next door. A big plus is the spacious parking lot right in front of the restaurants, making it easy to stop by without hassle.

Types of Sushi

Tokio 07 Izakaya serves a variety of traditional sushi options.

If you're new to sushi, here's a quick overview of some common types:

  • Gunkan: Oval-shaped sushi wrapped in seaweed, topped for example with fish roe.

  • Maki: Sushi rolls wrapped in seaweed (nori) with rice and various fillings.

  • Nigiri: A small mound of sushi rice topped with a slice of fish or seafood.

  • Sashimi: Thinly sliced raw fish or seafood, served without rice (see below).

  • Temaki: Hand-rolled sushi shaped like a cone, filled with rice, fish, and vegetables.

  • Uramaki: Inside-out rolls where the rice is on the outside.

More Places for Sushi Lovers

Mérida has some excellent sushi spots. As fellow sushi fans, I’d like to suggest two more places worth visiting:

  • Sushi Club Mérida is situated in Plaza Mangus, a shopping center on the northern edge of Mérida. The highly recommended restaurants Aura Rooftop and Cienfuegos can also be found within the same building.

  • Miyabi | El Árbol is our favorite sushi restaurant. Situated in the quaint Árbol shopping center, it lies a few kilometers north of the city center. The restaurant was built around an old tree that extends through the roof.

A Little Japanese

Last but not least, something to show off:

The Japanese word "izakaya" consists of three kanji characters (居酒屋), which translate to "stay, drink, place." Essentially, it refers to a spot where you can order a drink, settle in, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere for a while.
