First-Hand Insights on Mercado Chen Bech
Mercado Chen Bech (in Mayan: Kúuchil koonol Chen-Bech) is located on the eastern edge of the Centro on the corner of Calle 40A and Calle 57.
You can find the Chen Bech Market two blocks away from the Universidad de las Artes de Yucatán, situated at the northern tip of Parque La Plancha.
Chen Bech (alternatively spelled Chem Bech) means "bird's nest". You’ll find all kinds of typical Yucatecan food (meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables, fresh juices and so on).

There are also flowers, some toys, clothing and other items at this cozy small farmers market. At the entrance area are some food stalls. Prices seem to be a bit higher than other markets in Mérida and there are no parking spaces nearby.
The market has about 100 different stalls and sales areas. Some of them are outside, directly facing the street, while most are indoors. The origins of the market date back to the late 19th century. The last major renovation of the market hall was in 2014.
Visiting and shopping in one of Mérida's markets is always an experience, and the noise, bustle and different flavors of the food are an essential part of the atmosphere.
The Chembech Neighborhood
Chembech has seen an influx of expatriates in recent years. The community is known for its friendly atmosphere and Public transportation is easily accessible. Otherwise, the area isn’t particularly exciting, and I’d recommend exploring other neighborhoods instead.
Parque del Chembech
A few meters away from the market is the Parque del Chembech. With its four trees, one shrub, two benches, two love seats and a mini fountain in the middle, it is probably one of the smallest "parks" in Mérida.
In fact, the park is just a small paved triangle between Calle 40 and Calle 42 and, to be honest, not really worth mentioning. And for once, there is also no church nearby. You’re better off heading to the old Cantina del Chembech, which is right across the street.
