First-Hand Insights on Ki'Xocolatl
Ki'Xocolatl – a bit tricky to pronounce if you don’t speak Spanish – is a café and chocolate shop. There are 10 stores in Mexico, with four of them located in Mérida.
The most well-known location in Mérida is probably the one in my favorite little park in the city center – Parque Santa Lucia. You can sit outside on the terrace or inside, depending on your preference. The café and chocolate shop opened in 2012.
The other three stores are all located in the northern part of Mérida, each inside a shopping center. You’ll find them at
Plaza Galerías on Calle 60,
City 32 in the Montebello residential area on Calle 32,
and Plaza Boulevares in Colonia San Antonio de Cucul, also on Calle 32.
However, Ki'Xocolatl is more than just a cafe, but a company founded in 2003 that exports its products beyond Mexican borders and all over the world. Its founders are from Belgium but, as they say themselves, Mexican at heart.
I like to enjoy a coffee, cappuccino or a "chocolaty" drink like a mint chocolate tea, a hot maya chocolate with chili or a frozen frappe or with a brownie.
Dark chocolate is often used and the flavor is geared more towards adults than kids, but your kids should find something here too.

The Online Store of Ki'Xocolatl
Ki'Xocolatl also has an online store. The website is listed in the overview above. You can buy chocolates and pralines but also other items like a Ki'Xocolatl body lotion with cocoa.
What Does Ki'Xocolatl Mean
As mentioned earlier, Ki'Xocolatl can be a bit tricky to pronounce if you don’t speak Spanish. And in case you’re wondering about the spelling: the word “chocolate” may come from the Nahuatl chocolātl or the Mayan xocolatl.
The Origin of Cocoa
The cocoa used here is sourced from dedicated farmers in Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Ticul Plantation in the south of Yucatán.
These regions are renowned for their rich cacao heritage, with Tabasco and Chiapas contributing approximately 95% of Mexico's cocoa production.
The Ticul Plantation, near Mérida, is a well-thought-out cacao-growing project, with an educational component, being carried out by people who have decades of real experience with cacao.
