First-Hand Insights on Casa Peón de Regil
Casa Peón de Regil is a striking early 20th-century neoclassical mansion in Mérida, sitting right on the corner of Paseo de Montejo and Calle 35 – which is probably why it caught my eye early on.
Between 1870 and 1920, Yucatán flourished thanks to the henequen boom. In the midst of this prosperity, the neoclassical mansion was built in 1908 on Mérida’s grand boulevard for the wealthy landowner Pedro de Regil Cámara.
Architecture of the Building
The intricate architecture immediately catches your eye, with its carved stone facade and a veranda lined with numerous white Ionic columns. The pastel color scheme in shades of pink, yellow, and white adds to its distinctive appearance.
The veranda and roof feature elegant white balustrades. A well-kept garden with lawns, hedges, trees, and palms surrounds the house. A wide staircase leads to the spacious veranda and main entrance.
About Peón de Regil
Pedro de Regil Cámara was a prominent landowner in Mérida during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He hailed from the influential de Regil family, which played a significant role in Yucatán's henequen industry.
In 1890, Cámara was elected Manager-Director of Hacienda Itzincab-Cámara, a major henequen-producing estate located approximately 35 kilometers from Mérida.
Under his leadership, the hacienda thrived, contributing to the region's economic prosperity during the henequen boom. Cámara's success in the industry enabled him to commission the construction of the mansion on Paseo de Montejo.
Headquarter of a Financial Group
The building now serves as the headquarters of Inbursa Grupo Financiero, a financial group owned by Carlos Slim Helú. Slim, a Mexican entrepreneur and philanthropist.
He was once ranked the richest person in the world for several years and remains the wealthiest man in Mexico today.
Inbursa Grupo Financiero is a holding company that provides banking and financial services for both individuals and businesses through its subsidiaries.
Its offerings include investment funds, insurance policies such as auto and health insurance, and leasing options for motor vehicles.
