First-Hand Insights on Artesanaria

Artesanaria is located directly across from Parque de Santa Lucia – and since I love stopping by that little park anyway, it didn’t take long before I wandered in to check it out.

The store, painted in a vibrant shade of orange, is hard to miss. It’s housed in a corner building and offers a great selection of traditional Yucatecan handicrafts and souvenirs.

There are all kinds of unique finds here, from small and large sugar skulls to intricately painted wooden figures (they are called "alebrijes") in every size.

We've built up quite a big collection of these alebrijes over time, picking them up from different places across Mexico. These colorful, animal-like fantasy creatures are a big part of Mexican folk art and make nice souvenirs.

You’ll also find beautifully crafted ceramics like plates and cups, handmade jewelry, woodwork, glassware, vibrant pillowcases, and even a selection of local spirits. There is a lot to see, and the variety is impressive.

Quality and Prices

The quality of the items is excellent, but the prices reflect both the location and the fact that the shop caters to tourists. Still, even if you are not planning to buy anything, I’d definitely recommend stopping by.

The store is filled with beautiful pieces, and just looking around is already a pleasure. This is also a great place to get a sense of local craftsmanship.

If you find something you love but the price feels a bit too high, you can keep an eye out for it at one of the markets in Mérida and maybe score a better deal.

Parque de Santa Lucia

With the very popular Parque de Santa Lucia, full of cafes and restaurants, sitting right across the street, you really can’t go wrong with a visit to the area.

Parque de Santa Lucia is one of Mérida’s most inviting spots, offering a mix of history, culture, and a lively atmosphere. Originally built in 1542, the park is surrounded by colonial-style buildings and is home to cozy restaurants with outdoor seating.

If you’re here on a Thursday night, you can catch the Yucatecan Serenade, a weekly open-air event with live music and traditional dance.
