Parque Zoológico Animaya

Parque Zoológico del Bicentenario - or Parque Zoológico Animaya is the newer of the two public zoos in Mérida (it opened in 1980). The zoo is located on the western outskirts, around 10 km from the city centre.

However, a visit is worthwhile, also because of the zoo's special concept. Animaya is intended to provide an environment similar to that of a safari. You can take a safari tour in a small truck or a boat tour with a catamaran.

And the best thing is: The entrance as well as the tours are free of charge. Children can also ride a small train in the park, which is not free, but only costs a few pesos.

Animals at the zoo

The animals, such as giraffes, zebras, lions, camels, flamingos or crocodiles, can move relatively freely, so there is only one path to go throughout the zoo. There is also a lake with ducks, pelicans and geese. On three small islands with tall trees live monkeys.

At the back, a little apart from the others is the lions' village. It is a large space with rocks and bushes, creating the appearance of the savannah region. A little more to the center, are the giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, ostriches and deer.

Acuático Animaya

For children up to 12 years old there is a small water park "Parque Acuático Animaya" on the north side of the park. On busy days the time in the water park is limited.

The water park is open on weekends from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm or during the Mexican vacation season from Tuesday to Sunday and on vacations. The entrance is also free here. So don't forget your kids' swimsuits and maybe take a change of clothes.

What does Animaya mean?

In case you are wondering what Animaya means: The name is made up of the words "Animales" (animals) and "Mayab" (a name for the Yucatán region), emphasising the zoo's focus on the wildlife of the Mayan region.

Parque Zoológico del Centenario

There are two zoos in Mérida. Parque Zoológico del Centenario (west of the city center) is the most important zoological park in the city of Mérida and was founded in 1910.

The animal area includes an aviary, reptiles and amphibians, primates and mammals. The zoo has been around for quite a long time and the animals are unfortunately kept in small cages. Especially for children, Animaya is more suitable.
