First-Hand Insights on Parque Zoológico Animaya

When you’re not sure where to go, picking a city with a zoo is usually a safe bet. But Animaya’s a whole different story – this place was actually designed to feel like you’re on safari. And honestly, it really does.

Parque Zoológico del Bicentenario – better known as Animaya – is Mérida’s newer public zoo, located about 10 km west of the city center. Opened in 2020, it’s definitely worth a visit thanks to its unique concept.

Animaya aims to provide an educational and recreational environment where you can observe animals such as giraffes, zebras, lions, camels, flamingos, crocodiles, ostriches, and various primates.

The park’s set up like different prairies, each one representing ecosystems from the Americas, Europe-Asia, and Africa. You can hop on a little safari truck or take a catamaran ride – both get you up close to the animals in a really fun way.

And the best thing is: The entrance as well as the tours are free of charge. Children can also ride a small train in the park, which is not free, but only costs a few pesos.

Animals at the Zoo

The animals at the zoo enjoy a relatively open environment, creating a natural and relaxed atmosphere as you follow the single path that winds through the park.

Along the way, you will come across a lake where ducks, pelicans, and geese gather, adding to the serene setting.

Nearby, three small islands with towering trees serve as homes for lively monkeys, offering a opportunity to observe their behavior in a habitat that feels close to nature.

Toward the back of the park, slightly set apart from the rest, you will find the lions' village. This expansive area is designed with rocks and bushes, capturing the essence of the savannah landscape.

Moving closer to the center, you can encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, ostriches, and deer, all thriving in spacious, naturalistic habitats that bring the safari experience to life.

If you’re looking for a place that feels real and full of character, this park is definitely worth a visit.

Acuático Animaya

For children up to 12 years old, the north side of Animaya features a small water park called "Parque Acuático Animaya," where kids can cool off and have a great time splashing around.

On busier days, time in the water park may be limited, so I recommend planning your visit accordingly to make the most of this family-friendly spot.

The water park is open on weekends from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm or during the Mexican vacation season from Tuesday to Sunday and on vacations. The entrance is also free here. So don't forget your kids' swimsuits and maybe take a change of clothes.

What Does Animaya Mean?

In case you are wondering what Animaya means: The name is made up of the words "Animales" (animals) and "Mayab" (a name for the Yucatán region), emphasising the zoo's focus on the wildlife of the Mayan region.

Parque Zoológico del Centenario

There are two zoos in Mérida. Parque Zoológico del Centenario (west of the city center) is the most important zoological park in the city of Mérida and was founded in 1910.

The zoo's animal area features a variety of species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, primates, and mammals. While the zoo has been established for quite some time, the animals are unfortunately housed in rather small enclosures.

I would especially recommend Animaya for families with children, as its design and attractions make it particularly enjoyable and engaging for younger visitors.
