Museo Meteorito in Progreso
Museo del Meteorito de Progreso Yucatán (Meteorite Museum of Progreso) opened on September 30th, 2022. It is located directly on the beach promenade Malecón de Progreso, about seven blocks east of the pier.
The Meteorite Museum in Progreso on the Yucatán Peninsula offers a journey through 14 billion years of history, focusing on an event that changed the history of the Earth - the impact of the Chicxulab meteorite.
75% of the plant and animal species became extinct on Earth at that time. The extinction of the dinosaurs can also be traced back to this. Scientists link this mass extinction to the impact of a massive asteroid that struck the Yucatán Peninsula around 66 million years ago.
The modern, expansive building was purpose-built for the museum and boasts striking architecture that impresses me both inside and out. As a popular attraction, it draws a steady stream of visitors who come to experience the exhibits.
Museum Exhibition
The exhibition begins with the Big Bang 66 million years ago and continues in the meteorite room. In the so-called "Time Tunnel", the transition from the first years of the Earth to the age of the dinosaurs is shown. In the "Walk with Dinosaurs" room, six screens tell about the life of the dinosaurs.
The meteorite's impact, over 66 million years ago, reshaped Earth's history, triggering the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and paving the way for the rise of mammals and, ultimately, humans. The fifth room in the Musum features a projection that vividly brings the meteorite’s impact to life, immersing you in the dramatic event that transformed the course of life on Earth.

The museum also showcases an extraordinary collection of fossils and in the eighth and last room, most excitingly, mechatronically controlled dinosaurs that bring prehistory vividly to life. These mechanical marvels move and roar, offering a lifelike glimpse into what these incredible creatures might have looked and sounded like millions of years ago.
For children, these dinosaurs are undoubtedly the highlight of the museum, sparking awe and curiosity with their realistic movements and impressive size. The combination of interactive exhibits and thrilling animations makes the Meteorite Museum a captivating experience for visitors of all ages. You will find the most popular dinosaurs, such as Tyrannosaurus, Spinosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Triceraptor and Triceratops.
On the Museo des Meteorites' Facebok page you can find lots of pictures and videos so that you can get a better first impression of the museum. The museum is also represented on Instagram. And of course, you should also plan a walk along Progreso's beautiful beache promenade.

Interactivity
The museum is very modern, with lots of light and sound effects. The Museo utilizes augmented reality technology to enhance the visitor experience, offering immersive insights into the meteorite's impact and its profound effects on Earth's history.
Interactivity is also possible. With the digital tablets available for visitors, you (or your kids) can unleash your creativity and design your very own dinosaurs! It’s a fun and interactive way to dive into the world of prehistory.
Tickets and Prices
Tickets are purchased directly on-site, and both cash and card payments are accepted.
As is common in Mexico, admission prices are tiered: foreign adults pay 350 pesos, while residents pay a reduced price of 250 pesos. Children and seniors with valid ID enjoy an even lower rate of 100 pesos. Residents of Puerto Progreso and small children (up to the age of 4) are granted free entry. Please note that there is no discount available for students.
Bathroom facilities are available for an additional fee of 20 pesos, and the shower service costs 30 pesos. While these services add convenience, it’s worth noting that such extra charges might feel unnecessary given the already substantial admission price.
What you should know
The most important thing is probably to have the right expectations. The museum and the tour are designed for children. It's not a museum in the classic sense, but is more of a show with videos, light effects and mechanized dinosaurs.
As an adult, you will perhaps miss out on more in-depth scientific information. It is also important to know that the 30-minute guided tour is only in Spanish. Without a good knowledge of Spanish, it won't be so much fun.
What is also unusual is that you cannot move around the museum freely, only as part of a guided tour with groups of around 30 to 40 people. And due to the format of the guided tours, longer waiting times may occur at peak hours.
Whether a visit is worthwhile for you depends to a certain extent on your budget. To be honest, the prices are relatively high for what is on offer (especially for foreign adults).
An alternative option
Not far from the museum, next to Progreso, is Chicxulub Puerto. There is also a great attraction for kids right on the beach, the Sandero Jurásico Theme Park. However, the admission prices are hardly any lower.
On the "Chicxulub Jurassic Trail" there are life-size dinosaurs (for example Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Triceratops and many others) that are also moved by motors and also make sounds. In contrast to the museum, however, this is all in the open air (therefore best suited for the late afternoon).

The Emerald Coast
Progreso is the most famous port city on the Emerald Coast. The Emerald Coast (Costa Esmeralda in Spanish) is an unofficial name for the 98 km long coastal area in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula. The name comes from the emerald colored water.
