First-Hand Insights on Museo de la Canción Yucateca

The Museo de la Canción Yucateca Asociación Civil (engl. Museum of Yucatecan Song Civil Association) is a place to explore the musical heritage of Yucatán. You will find it just a few meters from Parque de la Mejorada, in the district of the same name.

Founded in 1978, the museum’s slogan, "Una puerta al mundo de la música romántica" or "A door to the world of romantic music," perfectly reflects its purpose.

It was created to honor the region’s most important composers, singers, and musicians who shaped the distinctive sounds of Yucatecan trova and bolero music.

As you enter, three life-size sculptures greet you:

  • Pepe Domínguez, a well-known composer,

  • alongside trova legends Guty Cárdenas

  • and Ricardo Palmerín.

The Museum of Yucatecan Song is housed in a restored colonial-style building painted in a turquoise color. Inside, a spacious courtyard with arched corridors leads to various exhibition rooms.

You will find

  • a video salon,

  • a small theater,

  • a sculpture museum,

  • a café,

  • and a gift shop.

Highlights

One of the highlights of Museo de la Canción Yucateca is a collection of more than fifty oil portraits of composers, singers, poets, and cultural promoters.

Another particularly interesting section focuses on the golden age of Yucatecan music, displaying vinyl records, microphones, and historical photographs from the time when Mérida was a major center for trova and bolero music.

song lyrics, manuscripts, photographs

As you walk through the museum, you will see original manuscripts, antique songbooks, handwritten scores, and personal belongings of legendary musicians.

Traditional instruments like guitars, violins, and marimbas are displayed alongside vintage recording equipment and radios, showing how Yucatecan music developed over time.

If you love music, history, or just want to experience a different side of Mérida’s culture, this museum is definitely worth a visit. It offers a deeper understanding of the trova tradition and its lasting influence on Yucatán’s artistic identity.

Interactive Exhibits and Events

Several rooms offer interactive exhibits where you can listen to classic Yucatecan songs and learn about their composers. The displays are engaging and give a sense of how deeply music is woven into the region’s identity.

Beyond its exhibits, the museum is also an active cultural space. It hosts live performances, special events, and educational programs that help keep Yucatán’s musical traditions alive.
