First-Hand Insights on Museo de Arte Popular de Yucatán
Museo de Arte Popular de Yucatán (Museum of Folk Art from Yucatán) is no longer autonomous and Casa Molina is no longer the headquarter of the museum. The collection was moved to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya at the end of 2023.
Exhibition at the Mayan World Museum
The folk art exhibition at the Mayan World Museum opened in February 2024.
Exhibited are for example
pottery,
musical instruments,
jewelry,
textiles (lace and embroidery),
and also sacral and ritual icons.
There are explanations in English and Spanish and also some videos are shown (e.g. how the filigree jewelry is made). As before, free workshops are offered to delve deeper into the world of popular art.

The History of the Museum
Between 2007 and 2023, the Museo de Arte Popular de Yucatán was housed in the historic Casa Molina, a beautiful early 20th-century colonial building located at the corner of Calle 57 and 59, adjacent to the Parque de La Mejorada in Mérida's city center.
The museum featured a well-curated collection of traditional and contemporary Yucatecan arts and crafts from across the country, along with a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions.
The building itself was constructed Italian architect Enrico Deserti as a wedding gift from Olegario Molina Solís, a wealthy henequen merchant and former governor of Yucatán, to his daughter Carmela Molina.
In 1924, the mansion was purchased by Manuel Zapata Martínez, a wealthy merchant, as a wedding gift for his daughter. Upon the death of its owners, the residence was then purchased and restored to become the Museum of Popular Art of the Yucatán, where it remained until 2023, when the collection was relocated.
