First-Hand Insights on Mercado Miguel Alemán

I first checked out the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús – its modern, unconventional design definitely stood out. But honestly, its sleek style couldn’t quite match the charm of the traditional Mercado Miguel Alemán, just across the block.

Mercado Miguel Alemán (a little outside the center one block from Parque de la Alemán) is a small local farmers market. The Miguel Alemán market as well as the entire district is named after the former Mexican president Miguel Alemán Valdés.

The market is easy to find, but since Mercado Miguel Alemán doesn’t have an official street number, the best reference point is the intersection of Calle 24 and Calle 27.

The market is open daily, usually from early in the morning until late at night. The market offers a variety of products, including fresh food, spices, handmade crafts, clothing, jewelry, household goods and much more.

Each market in Mérida has its own specialties and features. The farmers market in the neighborhood Miguel Alemán – and also in Colonia Chuburná – are especially great if you're looking for fresh vegetables, meat, and spices.

Spices and dried herbs displayed in colorful sacks at the traditional Mexican market in Mérida, Mercado Miguel Alemán.

Mercado Miguel Alemán is also a top spot for a delicious breakfast with Mexican style food. There are food stalls offering local dishes and snacks.

Some of the most popular products are traditional Mexican dishes such as tamales, tortillas, salsas and fresh fruit and vegetables.

The people of the district bearing the same name use the market not only for shopping, but also as a meeting place. As a tourist you get a nice insight in an authentic Yucatán market. But you should not be claustrophobic, because it can be a bit crowded.

The Miguel Alemán Neighbarhood

The Miguel Alemán neighborhood is located northeast of downtown Mérida. At the heart of this area, alongside the market, is the large Parque de la Alemán, which extends in front of the El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús church.

Parque de la Alemán

Parque de la Alemán is located one block west of the market. The park is a favorite gathering place for families, joggers, dog walkers, fitness enthusiasts, and skaters and and is always full of life.

You'll find a skating rink, a children's playground, and even a small funfair with a few rides. On weekends, the park often hosts various events, with a dedicated stage for cultural performances.

El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

Directly facing Parque de la Alemán, El Sagrado Corazón de Jesús stands as a significant place of worship and a hub for the local community. Renowned for its graceful façade and serene ambiance, the church welcomes both visitors and parishioners alike.

The name, which translates to "The Sacred Heart of Jesus," reflects a Catholic devotion that honors Christ’s heart as a representation of divine love.

Architecturally, the church showcases a harmonious mix of colonial and traditional styles, adding to its historical and cultural charm.

  1. Go early for fresh picks and less crowding.

  3. Bring small bills (markets are cash-based).

  4. Don’t be afraid to haggle (non-food items).

  5. Try the street food – it’s safe and delicious.

  6. Slow down (people-watching is half the fun)
