First-Hand Insights on Mercado de Chuburná
Mercado de Chuburná is way up north in Mérida’s Chuburná de Hidalgo neighborhood, pretty far from the city center – which is probably why I’ve only made it out there once.
The market is located directly north of Parque de Chuburná (K'íiwik Chuburná Park), with the Parroquia Nuestra Señora De La Asunción at its center. To the west of the park, a soccer field borders it directly.
Mercado de Chuburná is a traditional and right busy market (especially on weekends) in a hall where food (fruits, vegetables, fish, meat and others), but also shoes, clothing, or handicrafts are offered.
The market was built in 1965 under the administration of then-Mayor Agustín Martínez Arredondo. In 2018, the market hall was remodeled and reopened.

It may be a small market, but with over 30 stalls, there is plenty to choose from. You will find classic Mexican favorites like tacos, tortas, enchiladas, quesadillas, and tamales, along with regional specialties such as cochinita pibil, panuchos, and salbutes.
In the Surrounding Area
If you're in the area, take some time to look around. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, located in the park next to the market, was once part of an old monastery dating back to the henequen era.
Right next to the Chuburná market, you'll find flower stalls, street vendors, and even a small playground for children.
What Does Chuburná Mean?
Where does the market name come from? Chuburná means "House of yellow cotton" and comes from the Mayan words Chubul (yellow cotton) and Naah (house).
In the past, there were several corn plantations in the area, which have gradually given way to settlement. The fertile soil and favorable climate offered ideal conditions for the cultivation of maize.
Parroquia Nuestra Señora De La Asunción
Right next to the market, you will find the Parroquia Nuestra Señora De La Asunción (Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption). It is just a few meters away, making it an easy stop while exploring the area.
The church sits within the park next to the market, so you can take a short walk under the trees, enjoy the surroundings, and step inside.
The church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, refers to the belief in the Virgin Mary's bodily ascent into heaven at the end of her earthly life. The church offers daily masses, with multiple services on Sundays.
