First-Hand Insights on Rectoría de la Ermita de Santa Isabel
Nestled in Mérida's historic San Sebastián neighborhood, the Iglesia Ermita de Santa Isabel (Saint Elizabeth Church) is a charming colonial-era church.
It sits about one block southeast of the larger Parroquia de San Sebastián, along with the nearby Parque de San Sebastián and Mercado de San Sebastián. The Calle 77 connects all these spots, making it easy to explore them together in one visit.
This quaint church is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje (Our Lady of the Good Journey), reflecting its historical role as a spiritual haven for travelers embarking on the Camino Real to Campeche.
The simple yet elegant façade features a square design topped with a pyramid-shaped belfry housing three bells. Surrounding the church is a picturesque garden filled with native Yucatecan plants, providing a serene spot to relax and reflect.
If you find yourself in the area, it's worth taking a moment to visit this tranquil site and perhaps enjoy a quiet moment in its botanical garden.
Origins of the Church
Iglesia Ermita de Santa Isabel church was built by Gaspar González de Ledezma. The exact date of its foundation is not known, but an inscription over the main door marks 1748.
The Botanical Garden
Right next to the church on the left side is the small Parque Ermita de Santa Isabel and on the right side is a botanical garden.
The botanical garden is closed during the week, but is sometimes open during the weekends, for Sunday's biciruta - but often there is someone there who will let you in if you ask. Two blocks from the Ermita church you will find the San Sebastian Park.
Who Was Santa Isabel?
Named Santa Isabel after Saint John the Baptist’s mother, the church was also called "Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje" for its spot along the royal road to Campeche and other communities.
Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah and a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus. According to the Gospel of Luke, both Elizabeth and Zechariah were descendants of Aaron, the first high priest of Israel, highlighting their priestly lineage.
Despite being advanced in years and previously unable to have children, Elizabeth miraculously conceived John after the angel Gabriel announced to Zechariah that they would have a son. Elizabeth is venerated as a saint in various Christian traditions.
