First-Hand Insights on Cenote Zazil Tunich
On the Yucatán Peninsula, cenotes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are very basic – maybe just an old wooden staircase and a low entrance fee – perfect if you’re after a more rugged, natural experience.
Personally, I prefer cenotes like Zazil Tunich. Privately owned and opened in 2017, it’s fully developed with amenities such as accommodation, a restaurant, and even the option to participate in a Mayan ceremony, offering a comfortable and well-organized visit.
The features are of course also reflected in the prices. If you accept this or are looking for it, the Cenote Zazil Tunich is one of the best options and a breathtakingly beautiful experience.
It is a large cenote that is completely underground. The cenote is 200 metres in diameter and is covered in striking stalactites and stalagmites. The biggest stalactite in Yucatán can also be found here.
The stalactite formations are a good part of the special charm of Zazil Tunich. Not all the ground is covered with water, and it is not very deep, but it is quite enough to swim in. Changing and shower facilities as well as lockers are available.
Key Facts About Cenotes
Cenotes are natural sinkholes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, revealing groundwater pools. Found primarily in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, they were considered sacred by the Maya and served as vital water sources and ceremonial sites.
