Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes

Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes is located in the eastern part of Mérida's historic center, and it stands out as one of the more modern churches in the city, especially when compared to the older colonial buildings around it.

You’ll notice its distinctive architecture right away, which is quite different from the typically simple facades of Mérida's colonial churches. The church is painted in a striking combination of beige and pink, making it one of the more colorful buildings in the area.

Construction of the church began in 1889, specifically on February 11th, and it was officially completed and inaugurated on February 9, 1908. The church is relatively small but architecturally significant, with three naves, a chancel, a presbytery, and a sacristy.

It also has a large hall that adds to the church's welcoming atmosphere. The ceiling, crafted from wood, gives the interior a warm, traditional feel. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, and its design reflects the importance of the Catholic faith in the region.

You can also find Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes on Facebook and on Instagram.

The Lourdes Grotto

One of the more unique features of the church is the replica of the Lourdes Grotto, which can be found on one side of the building. This replica is modeled after the grotto in Lourdes, France, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared in the 19th century.

The grotto in Mérida was completed in 1952 and was blessed by Archbishop Dr. Fernando Ruiz Solórzano. Inside the grotto, you'll find a large picture of Our Lady of Lourdes along with an altar, creating a peaceful spot for reflection and prayer.

The church and its grotto are not only places of worship but also important cultural landmarks in Mérida, drawing visitors who are interested in both the religious significance and the architectural beauty of the site.

Who was Our Lady of Lourdes?

Our Lady of Lourdes is another title of the Virgin Mary. She is venerated under this title by the Roman Catholic Church because of her apparitions in Lourdes, France. Her first apparition was on February 11, 1858, when she spoke to the 14-year-old girl Bernadette Soubirous.

In Mexico, Our Lady of Lourdes is deeply revered, with many people turning to her for protection, healing, and comfort. Devotion to her is widespread, particularly among the Catholic community, and her feast day on February 11th is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Many churches across the country hold special Masses and processions in her honor, and the city of Lourdes, near Mexico City, even has a sanctuary dedicated to her. Pilgrims visit these sites year-round, seeking her intercession and strength, making her one of the most beloved figures in Mexican Catholicism.
