Museo Regional de Antropología

The Museo Regional de Antropología (Regional Museum of Anthropology) is housed in the Palacio Cantón, one of the most beautiful and iconic colonial buildings on Paseo de Montejo.

The museum has a history of over 100 years. It was inaugurated in the Palacio Cantón in December 1959 and reopened in 1980. In the decades prior to this, the museum had various other locations. In 1988, it was even temporarily housed in the former Juárez Prison for a very short period.

Exhibitions

From its Reopening in 1980 until 2012, the museum primarily showcased archaeological artifacts from the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. Since then, it has shifted its focus to hosting major rotating exhibitions on a wide range of topics.

Past exhibitions have included for example:

  • "The Book of Books: La X’tabay," which explored the legend of X’tabay,

  • "Ek Chuah: Trade Among the Maya," focusing on trade in Maya civilization,

  • "Palacio Cantón: Witness to History," which delved into the history of the building,

  • and "De Primissimo Cartello," highlighting the work of Pedro Guerra Jordán.

Mayan history

At the museum, you can therefore explore the development of the state, including its socio-political organization, rituals, beliefs, trade networks, and more. You’ll also find academic and cultural programs, and at the entrance, a book and gift shop awaits you.

Palacio Cantón

The Palacio Cantón, which houses the museum, is worth the price of admission in itself. It is one of the most beautiful, largest and best-known colonial buildings in Mérida.

The villa was built in the first decade of the 20th century by Francisco Cantón, governor of Yucatán, and from then on it was the family's residence. The eclectic architecture features classical, neoclassical and French Baroque details.

The world of archaeology

As mentioned, the museum no longer focuses primarily on archaeology. However, here are some fascinating facts about Maya archaeological sites on the Yucatán Peninsula:

A few tips

For teachers, students, children under 12, and INAPAM members with a valid ID, admission is free. On Sundays, entry is free for everyone, but this is also when it gets the most crowded. If you want to use a video camera, there is an additional fee of 45 pesos.

By the way, INAPAM stands for Instituto Nacional de las Personas Adultas Mayores and is a Mexican institution that provides various benefits and social support to older adults (aged 60 and above).

If you’re interested in seeing Maya archaeological art, be sure to visit the Mayan World Museum (El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida) as well. Located on the northern outskirts of the city, the museum displays a magnificent collection of more than 1,160 pieces.
