Iglesia de Itzimná
Iglesia de Itzimná is located in the Parque de Itzimná and is dedicated to "Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro" (Our Lady of Perpetual Help). The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, is venerated.
In 1572, first a small chapel was built and in 1710 the church Iglesia de Itzimná was built in its place. It is now a Roman Catholic church and features Franciscan architecture.
The original about 500 years old baptismal font of the first chapel is still preserved today. The red exterior of the church is appropriately very plain, and also the white walls inside the church have little decoration.
The god Itzamná
In pre-Hispanic times, there was a ceremonial center, where the Mayan god Itzamná was worshipped (hence the name of today's neighborhood). In Mayan mythology, the god Itzamná is a upper god and a creator deity who resides in heaven.
Itzamná is one of the most important gods in the pantheon of the Classic and Postclassic Maya. However, the Mayan sanctuary (and much of the area) was destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors (like many other places).
Itzimná neighborhood
The Itzimná district has great historical significance and is considered one of the most beautiful of Mérida. With its modern townhouses and old neoclassical-style villas, it is one of the most populous in Mérida.
It is also the most active Catholic community in the diocese of Yucatán. A little less well known and off the beaten path in Mérida, the area has a very quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
